Schooled: Week of 1/26

Book: Schooled
Pages: 0-Finish

Schooled follows the story of Capricorn Anderson, a boy raised in the hippie community of Garland by his grandmother, Rain. He has been homeschooled since he started school and the only person he knew was his grandmother. One day Rain gets in a serious accident which causes her to be unable to take care of her grandchild. Cap is taken by a social worker while Rain recovers. He stays with the social worker and experiences things he's never have. First off, it's very different for him because he never gets out of Garland and he has to go to the public middle school for the time being. Secondly, it's middle school. It's already terrible to imagine what it could be like for inexperienced Capricorn!

One of my favorite things about this book is that each chapter is written in a different character's point of view. At first, I feared that it would cause massive confusion because I have a bad history with other books with this technique, but it worked out well! It was interesting to hear from Cap to even the social worker that is housing him. It makes the novel much more realistic because we now know how several characters feel towards the events.

I designed a movie poster for Schooled. I used the shape of a notebook because "Schooled." For the same reason, I wrote the title in scribble handwriting to emphasize the fact that Capricorn is attending school. The reason I chose a tie-dye notebook is because it is symbol due to the fact that it is part of the hippie community. This also applies to the peace sign because that is a huge symbol for Cap and Rain and where they c ame from.

  1. Athziry,
Nice Blog post! I love the tie-dye colored notebook poster! It looks really cool and connects to the book well, based of your description. I liked your summary of the book as well because you didn't give away any spoilers but still told us what the book was about. I think the names of the characters are really interesting, what about you? Great job!

  2. Athziry,

Great blog this week! I always look forward to reading yours. I like how you first gave a summary of the book, and then explained your favorite things about it. The movie poster is also really amazing! Overall you did a good job, and I can't wait to read this book.

  3. First, I love the poster, that graphic design club has had an affect! Also, I agree, I liked that the reader could see everyone's emotions and point of view.

  4. *Wonder* actually has the same formatting with the different perspectives. What was the end result of his grandmother? Was she well afterwards? I would assume that it would've been an awkward experience with the social worker at first. What experiences did Cap have when he first went to the public middle school? I find this book to be different than others. Excellent job!
