Things Not Seen Week of 1/20/15

Book: Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements
Pages: Finished

The major conflict that the main character, Bobby, goes through is being invisible. One day he wakes up and there is no one looking back at him when he looks in the mirror. His parents try to help him out but it's as if they're trying to control his life. In this case, I am on Bobby's side because he constantly says in the book that the parents always make it about themselves. It's wild how a parent can make things all about them when the child is literally invisible. His parents do not want him to tell anyone about this because they know that Bobby would be taken for studies and they would never be with him again. I think that's the only time I agree with them because I wouldn't want my child to be taken away unless years of this passed and we couldn't find a solution to the problem.

Since Bobby is invisible, he doesn't go to school for weeks. No one has heard from him and it starts concerning the school. Before they could get involved, Bobby's parents get in a car accident while he's at home. They were injured so they had to stay in the hospital for a few days. The doctor calls Bobby and they had to make sure an adult was staying with him since he's still 15. This problem is quickly solved when mom says that Aunt Ethel would be staying with him. Thing is, Aunt Ethel lives in Florida, Bobby is in Chicago.

People try to contact Aunt Ethel and they realize that she is from Florida. Bobby's parents say that since he wasn't being himself, he took a vacation to Florida. Due to all these sudden changes, it grows suspicion to the police's mind. People would consider Mrs. Pagett, a CPS Agent as the antagonist of the novel due to the fact that she is constantly visiting them to investigate where Bobby is. I wouldn't see her as that because she is only doing her job. The author makes her appear as annoying but she's really only trying to do what she thinks is best for Bobby.

Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements is a very good book and I would recommend it to my classmates.

  1. I like how you bring up Mrs. Pagett's perspective and mention that she is only doing her job. It is important to be able to put yourself in another's shoes to see where they are coming from.
