This summer I read Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella. What made me want to read this book was the motion picture that came out a few years ago based on the book. I only have a faint memory of the film so I thought I could read the book then watch the movie again.
Rebecca Bloomwood is a
shopoholic and a journalist for a finance magazine. While she receives her £900 VISA bills, she's also writing about money organization on a magazine! One of the first conflicts she encounters is an interrupted sale. Her editor can't make it to a press conference so he asks her to fill in for him. That's a problem because before the press conference, she sees a sign at Denny and George that they are having a sale. They never have a sale so she enters the store. There, she sees a gorgeous (and discounted) Denny and George Scarf and falls in love with it. It turns out to be the last one in stock and now she has to buy it. As she goes to the register, she sees she has forgotten her VISA card at her desk back in the office. She then asks the cashier if she can put it on hold so she can get her card but only has until 6 pm.

The meeting takes forever, how is she going to get her card AND the scarf? At the meeting she asks someone for money saying she wants to buy a sick aunt a present. She gets the money and gets to buy the scarf, but the man she borrowed money from was at the store! She continues with her twisted lie and gets away with it.. For now.
It's interesting how much of a compulsive shopper she is. I don't understand a lot of it even with reading the book. How does the mind of a compulsive buyer work? Is it that serious? I would just say "stop buying things" but it may be similar to telling a hoarder "clean up everything, stop collecting stuff." It's something that Rebecca works on and it takes time. I would recommend this book to my peers. It's different from other books, and it's really great. It's a series so I'm looking forward to reading more shopaholic adventures.

ReplyDeleteI have read this book and many other in the series and I find them very entertaining. I haven't seen the movie though. Would you recommend that I see it?
Mrs. Larson,
ReplyDeleteThe movie really is great! How are the other books? Do they follow the storyline of the previous book?
