why should you read it/picture books

This week I read Drawing From Memory by Allen Say. This book is about a boy who is passionate about drawing but can't because his father says artists are not respectable. Drawing From Memory tells us about his journey to achieving his dream. Allen Say started drawing when his mother taught him to read to keep him from going outside. All the kids would be out by the ocean and his mother did not want Allen to get hurt so she decided to teach him to read at a young age. Allen started reading comic books and fell in love with them. Ever since, he wanted to be a cartoonist when he grew up, so he drew all the time. That's when his father said that he did not approve of it. Since Allen Say loved drawing so much, he would draw in secret!

Drawing From Memory reminds me of a video I once saw on YouTube. It was about a girl who is an amazing artist and comes from an Asian background. She moved around a lot and she enjoyed drawing. She told her parents that she wanted to draw for a living but her parents didn't approve of it because it's not "respectable." What I like about this girl and Allen's stories are that they didn't give up, they continued drawing and found ways to teach themselves. She taught herself to draw and Allen found his favorite cartoonist to work with. Their perseverance and bravery resulted in becoming great artist. I believe that the girl gets paid for her artwork to this day.

I think that everyone should read this book. It's a great story of ones journey to achieve their dream. It's also a picture book, which is fantastic. I like that it's a picture book because it shows his art style and past photographs. With these photos, readers will get the idea of how Allen Say is.

  1. I really like how you did a connection to someone in real life instead of a fictional character! I know if it were me I would've done a fictional character, but that's just me. I think it's cool how you remember the video that connects to Drawing From Memory, unless you watched really recently. You did a really great job with the summary so I know what's happening in the book! I think I'll start to read this after I'm finished with The Lost Years of Merlin. Great blog!
