Bluefish Week of: 2/24/14

Pages: 110

This book is so interesting and I barely find things out until the middle of the book and I was hooked. The main character, Travis, is this really secretive kid. During whole class reading he always says, "pass." when asked to read. At first I thought it was because he was shy but it turns out he can't read. Travis doesn't tell anyone but his teacher figures it all out and decides to teach him. The strategy is circling words he doesn't know, no matter how many they are, then his teacher would teach them to him. His classmate, Velveeta, found out about this by connecting all the dots and asked Travis about it. Travis didn't like that. The thing Velveeta did though was make a text to life connection. She noticed that the way Travis was learning was similar to a character from The Book Thief. I haven't read The Book Thief so I cannot say that's true, is it?

In the chapters where Velveeta is writing letters is to a man who died. His name was Calvin and he seems to mean a lot to her. He taught her a lot of things. In one of her letters she says, "I also remember when you bought me a toothbrush. And I remember you drilling me on the multiplication tables and spelling words." She is living in his old trailer so that's why she must care about him and miss and write letters to him. I'm still figuring out what he was to her but hopefully I will find out when I finish.

The cover page says, "Sometimes life is hard to read." I never got this but now I do. I got more excited then I should've when I discovered the reasoning of this sentence. It says that because Travis has difficult reading. Originally I thought that it meant that life is confusing but turn out no.

  3. If Travis is learing ot read like that then he is reading how Liesel did in The Book Thief! I'm surprised you made that connection if you haven't read the book! Maybe the man Velveeta is writing to is her dad? It seems like it could even be her brother, too. How come Travis never learnt to read? Was it the school he went to before? Great blog!

  4. Athziry,
Great Blog this week, I really enjoyed it! I'm also reading this book (as you might know) and I'm also really enjoying it! I'm surprised that Velveeta made the connection to "The Book Thief" (I haven't gotten to that part yet) because I actually thought this book was written a longer time ago! So, I googled it, and "The Book Thief" was published in 2006, and "Bluefish" was published in 2010! I thought it was older, (I don't know why) so hearing that actually made me look farther into the book! Now, back to your blog, I think you did a fantastic job with explaining your thoughts thoroughly, and you weren't redundant! It was a great, general, summary! So, overall, great blog this week, and I look forward to reading more of your blogs in the future!

  5. I love when books reference other books! It is true, she didn't know how to read.
