I am currently reading Bluefish by Pat Schmatz. I chose to read this book not only because it's for Battle of the Books, but I chose it because it seemed interesting. In the back description it says, "Travis doesn't want to do anything, especially try to get by in his classes, which never seems possible, anyway. He's a Bluefish-stupid, angry, and alone." I don't understand what this means completely. Does bluefish refer to the actual fish, or does it mean something else? I will probably discover this later on it the book. This is only confusing because I just started reading this book.
The main character's name is Travis. He is new to the town when he used to live in the country. It's a big change for him. He doesn't have anyone close to him that he lives with since he lives with his alcoholic grandfather. From what I've read, I don't think Travis is very fond of his grandfather. The only thing that kept him happy was his dog but he doesn't have the dog anymore. His grandfather seems to not care about Travis' feelings but he still cares about him.

The point of view in Bluefish is confusing. Some of the chapters are titled, "Velveeta on [day of the week]" I only know that those chapters are written in her point of view. The thing is that it's as if she is writing a letter to someone she lost, like someone died. I'm wondering who she lost.
Great blog this week! I loved how you really went into depth about how if you thought things were confusing or not. I also really liked how you talked about how you didn't know the meaning of the bluefish. i liked how you put that because then you made your prediction. Tell me how the book is! Overall GREAT JOB!

ReplyDeleteThis book really does sound confusing, but good! I really like how you explained yourself fully and gave your opinion. Why did Travis have to move to live with his grandfather? You probably don't know since you only just started to read the book. Maybe Travis's parents died or they're even more messed up than his grandfather. Is Velveeta go to the same school as Travis? This book really sounds interesting and I can understand why you would want to read it. Awesome blog!!! c:
