Notes From the Midnight Driver

I finally finished this book. I have to say it was an amazing book. It was well written but some parts were insanely boring to read. A majority of it was fantastic. The parts that I did not like were the ones where Alex kept talking about what chords he was playing in his guitar. I know nothing about guitars or anything about the melody or sound so when he said, "ding-dong-ding" or whatever, I don't know what's going on. I think it's unnecessary for the author to add that when Alex could have simply explained that he was playing a certain song and maybe add lyrics- that's it.

In my last blog post, Elenia asked, "Why did Alex get drunk?" His anger and all these overwhelming emotions motivated Alex to get drunk. I'm aware that some people drink their sorrows and that must've been what happened to Alex. The reason that Alex was angry is because everything with his parents being divorced, still gets him mad. They got a divorce because Alex's dad cheated on the mom so it was a pretty ugly divorce. The day of the incident, Alex's mom was out on a date, leaving Alex home alone with a bottle of old liquor. Him being upset and stupid, he got drunk and went for a ride.

There's this character named Sol. He is the old man that Alex visits at the nursing home for service hours. He comes out as a bitter person but late on in the story, I figured out why. Sol use to be a guitar player for his band and he did a lot of gigs. He was very successful. One day, his wife went to see a show (which she didn't do often.) She got a phone call telling her that their daughter was sick so she told Sol that they had to go. Sol said he couldn't leave because when he promises a gig, he'll do it. Angry, his wife left in a rush to get to their daughter. Unfortunately, a drunk driver hit the car where his wife was driving, killing her. His daughter got better but she didn't have a good relationship with her dad. She moved out as soon as she could, and became a judge. It's a difficult past he had and I understand why he's bitter at times.

  1. Nice blog, very well written. Maybe who ever wrote the book wanted onomatopoeia for credit or something. I don't know. "Ding-Dong-Ding"

  2. I liked how you answered the question the Elenia asked. Then that spiraled into even more detail. You integrated it very well.

  6. The guitar part does really sound boring. I used to play guitar and that even sounds boring! The author really should have explained better. When you talk about how Alex get drunk, did he hurt anybody? I really hope not. I can understand why Alex got drunk, but it's really not a good reason. Yes, his parents got a divorce and that can really have an emotional toll on kids, but by doing this you're only making the problem worse. I really hope Sol has come to terms with his wife's death, but then again, that's not really something you get over. Sometimes our flaws get the best of us. Great blog! c:
