Everyone is currently reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. It is a very interesting book! Some parts can be a little confusing but when we discuss in class, I fully understand. In the last chapters I read, I learn that Jonas is the main character. He is going to an age Twelve ceremony where he will be assigned his job. I learn that once you reach that age in their world, you are basically an adult.
The setting is an important part in this book. They live in a utopia. It's a society in which it's what most people would think of as "perfect". There are many differences between their world than to ours. For example, their rules are extreme. They have age restrictions just like us, except it's not things like "no drinking until the age of twenty-one". An example is that they have something called a comfort object that is like a stuffed toy. These comfort objects are taken away from them at age Eight! It's pretty extreme because I know people at this age still have their stuffed teddy bear to comfort them (don't deny it!) The citizens of that society are assigned their jobs. Where we live, we are able to choose whatever we want to be depending on our education and age.
The Giver reminds me a lot of Matched. In Matched, they live in a somewhat Utopia. Just like The Giver, they are assigned jobs. Some of the rules that they had in their world were also extreme. In Matched, they were assigned who they were going to marry. I know that in other countries there are such thing as arranged marriages, except the difference is that arranged marriages are usually from culture or religion.
I commented on Abdiel, Gabe, and Sarai's blog.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to read the book "Matched", but never got to because I would always have another book to read. Do you think you'd be able to live in a utopia like in "The Giver" or "Matched"? I don't think it's fair their comfort object should be taken away at eight. They should be able to keep it. Well, I hope you'll enjoy what next in the book!
ReplyDeleteYou should read it. (: I don't think I can. I do love how organized the Utopia is but I don't like their strict rules. Especially being assigned a certain job.
DeleteI've read "Matched" too. Have you read all the books in the trilogy?
