I actually finished The Giver, I won't spoil it, don't worry. I really enjoyed it. At first I was confused on who the characters were and I thought that it would be boring. I suppose I shouldn't judge a book before reading it. This book really leaves me thinking at the end of each chapter. I wonder what the society looks like. Is what we consider America, Elsewhere? I have so many questions and many of those questions might not be answered by the end of the book! That's where using our imagination and working with what we know kicks in.
I fully understand who The Giver is and why the book is called The Giver. It makes sense because The Giver gives Jonas his memories. Do you get it? The Giver who gives memories. It's an appropriate title for the book because The Giver is a very important character in this story. He is who helps Jonas with his job and figure out more about his own society.
"I liked the feeling of love,' [Jonas]
confessed. He glanced nervously at the speaker on the wall, reassuring
himself that no one was listening. 'I wish we still had that,' he
whispered. 'Of course,' he added quickly, 'I do understand that it
wouldn't work very well. And that it's much better to be organized the
way we are now. I can see that it was a dangerous way to live.
...'Still,' he said slowly, almost to himself, 'I did like the light they made. And the warmth."
When I read this, it stuck out to me. I understand what he meant by how it can be a dangerous way to live and why the society chose that there shouldn't be these feelings, especially love. Love is a very strong feeling and it can really change people and their mind set. It can be amazing and it can be horrible. Either way, the things that some citizens might do because of this strong feeling called love can make a huge impact to the society. That's the last thing that they would want. What I think is that that it's the complete opposite of what the society would like. They have the society organized the way it is probably because of what has happened in the past. Though, love can give you a light and warm feeling, it won't always be that way.

I really like that you choose that exact page to quote from. I know that sometimes, though I fight with my family, it is a good feeling to know they will always be there for you. It seems like in The Giver, there is no fuel to the emotions. It seems as if it was an interpretation of a feeling, yet not the actual thing.
