I am currently reading Looking for Alaska by John Green. I think that it is a great book so far. Miles Halter (later on given the nickname "Pudge") is one of the main characters. He loves memorizing the last words of famous people and is a well behaved student. His parents themselves said not to hang out with the wrong crowd or do anything inappropriate that the other students might be doing, and Miles said he wouldn't until he arrived at Culver Creek High School. The students at Culver Creek are cigarette loving pranksters; exactly the kind of people Miles shouldn't be with. Later on he meets a girl named Alaska. She is described as a really attractive girl but can be kind of rebellious. Miles instantly has feelings for her but she already has a boyfriend. Alaska and Miles do get along well, though.
I think Alaska is the most interesting character in this book. In the last chapter I read, she was smoking with friends. A friend asks her why she smokes so fast and she replied, "Y'all smoke to enjoy it, I smoke to die." This had me thinking. I wonder if she has a dark secret or something of that sort that she would say that. Another thing I wonder is if her boyfriend or any close friends know why she said that. Maybe I'm over analyzing things and she said that because that's how a lot of teenagers are, but that part made her an interesting character.
What made me keep reading is the characters' personalities. The things they say, do, and how they are. When reading this, I think that their actions are going to really affect the story later on. There always seems to be small conflicts thoughout the story and I can't just stop reading from there! It's an interesting book and I'm planning on finishing it.
Hi Athziry-
ReplyDeleteI know you are currently on a John Green binge! What fun! I have favorite authors where I read all of their books, and so what I'm wondering is do you think Green writes with similar themes and characters throughout his novels?
Yes, I think that the characters seem to be similar. The way they act and their personalities do remind me of previous books that I have read. I don't think the themes are all the same, though. (:
DeleteI like your blog you described the characters very well and I can tell what kind of people they are. This sounds like a great book.
ReplyDeleteI commented on Isabelle Ryan, Abdiel and Juliet.
ReplyDeleteTo me it seems this book is a bit more profound compared to other novels found. I am though, a bit worried about the "cigarette loving pranksters." NIce job on your blog and I hope you enjoy the rest of your book.
