TKAM- Character Relationships

Dill and Francis are young boys. In the family reunion we learn a bit about Francis: "he enjoyed everything I disapproved of, and disliked my ingenious diversions." This shows that he does not connect with Scout at all. This happens between Dill and Scout at one point, they lose the connection they had. This happened when he stopped including her when only Jem and Dill played.

Dill and Francis are very different. Francis is lame and Dill is great. According to Scout, Francis is boring. He acts older than the children and believes he's better. Francis calls Atticus a "nigger-lover" so that really shows what his parents are like. I think that Francis has more of an adult influence and this is shown by his racist way of thinking, which obviously he wasn't born with. Dill on the other hand, never really had an adult influence and we can tell by his childish ways and how much he loves to play and have adventures.
Dill has a lovely relationship with Scout; they say that going to get married! They seem to enjoy each others presence and that's what a great relationship is. They spend time together and they even have some similarities in their ways of thinking. Francis and Scout do not get along, though. That is shown when Scout beats him up and calls him swears.

Dill is an alter ego to Scout. They both have immense imaginations. This is shown when the children are doing their "plays." They are both creative kids and enjoy having their reckless child adventures. Dill is a positive effect on Scout because he makes her happy. Francis is Scout's foil. He brings out the violent side of her that gets her in trouble.
