The Voices of Rape Week of 11/2

Title: The Voices of Rape by Janet Bode

This week I read a book called The Voices of Rape. I chose this book because I felt like it's a topic that people need to be informed about. This book provides information about what rape really is, the different kinds, and stories from victims and offenders.

Something I really like about this book is that it has the accounts of the offenders. I've always heard the side of the victim but what was on the offenders mind when they committed such crime? A lot of them do not realize that what they've done qualifies as rape, and because of that, I recommend this book for everyone. Not only does it let people understand what rape really is, but it also helps people who have been victims to understand that it isn't their fault and resources on where to go and who to tell.

While reading this book, I gave myself an essential question; Why do people rape? I was hoping to get my question answered, but as far as I know, there is no answer. From what I've read on the accounts of offenders, a lot of them are bored with themselves, have low self-esteem, are clueless on what rape is, and just have no respect for anyone.

Something that this book was missing is the fact that not all rapists are reported or go to jail. The accounts show people who have been sent to the police and even ones that spend years in prison.
Edit; I think that this is because if the person was in the story, they would need to have penalty.

Since I'm already on the topic I kind of want to say something that really bothers me. Please stop saying, "(s)he's raping me!" when your friend pokes you. It's really bothersome. I just find it kind of lame how someone is raped, having their life at risk and is left emotionally traumatized while you're being dumb with your friends. Use other words like, "(S)he's being annoying, she's bothering me", ANYTHING but "rape". Thank you.

  1. Great blog this week! This sounds like a great book! I can't wait to read next week. I like how you added that last paragraph. It really bothers me too. I feel like people don't realize the real harm to the word "rape". Hopefully, people can be turned in the right direction now.

  2. I love how you addressed the poking with the friend things. I really see how that can be a serious issue. I have always felt bad for the people who get raped, but I never really looked into it as in why people actually do it. I watch the *Law and Order SVU* where it is all about that and those cases are petrifying just to hear about. Only if people could have more defense when it came to rape. Amazing job!

  3. I also find it annoying when others joke around with the word "rape". It's not funny, it's offensive and rude. It's like when people go around saying they have Ebola. That's a serious issue, why would you joke about that? I like how you set an EQ before reading, I've never done that before. Sorry your question didn't get a straightforward answer. I mean, if you read a book then you would expect to get one, right. But I guess when your topic is rape which is really varied and the offenders are different I guess the answers are going to be obscure.

  4. Athziry,

Rape, is a very serious topic. It happens all around the world and it affects people physically and emotionally. You stressed that well in your blog.

  5. Athziry,
I loved your blog this week! Rape is a very serious topic, like you've shown to stress throughout your blog, and I found the informative facts that you included really helped me to understand the topic better. I very much agree with you when you talk about how you always here the victim side of the rape, but not the offender, and that makes this book, most likely, so much more powerful! I also admire how at the end, you urge people to stop using the word rape when they're messing around with their friends. It's a very serious topic, that shouldn't be taken lightly when used. Overall, awesome blog this week, I learned so much!
