This week I read Annie's Baby: The Diary of Anonymous, A Pregnant Teenager Edited by Beatrice Sparks. I really enjoyed reading this book. I finished it in two days! I haven't read a book that quick in such a long time. Anyway, this book is written in diary entry form following the life of a fourteen year-old girl named Annie. She's an average teenage girl with friends and has a fun experiences with friends and her mother. It is until she meets Danny that her world turns upside down.
In her diary, she writes some made up words like "kadoodle" and "fizzy-izzy." I think that this shows how much of a child she is and also how playful she can be. It's not bad at all. This shows the meaning behind every teenage pregnancy story; that children are not ready to have children. As mature as the rest of the diary may be written, she adds those words and there it shows her childhood.
Danny is two years older than Annie. When they first met, she instantly became obsessed! She longed for the next encounter with him. They stared seeing each other without Annie's mom knowing. He treated her with a lot of care and respect and called her an, "Earth Angel." This is until one night where he gets drunk. He calls Annie terrible names and hits her. Instead of leaving him, Annie stays because he told her he was sorry. Then another time he tried to rape her. She was left afraid and yet she still stays with him because once again he apologized. This cycle continues on until she tells Danny that she is pregnant with his baby. He calls her a slut and that's when they finally break it off. Annie staying with him shows how much of a dumb naïve teenager she is. Unlike most people who are in abusive relationships who don't break it off because they fear their partner, she stayed because she "loved" him and he "loved" her. Danny would tell her, "I need you." and continued to do the sweetest things after an abusive event. I think that Danny was aware of how Annie thought and he saw her as an easy target and a sex-object. He would be kind to her to have someone to fool around with. That tells a lot about Danny as a person and he's not a good one!
PS: I'm not sure if this story is real or not. Some people do believe it's a real diary and others do not. However, that doesn't mean these things can't happen!
PPS: Annie did not get pregnant by rape, they had sex after that incident.
That seems like an interesting but creepy book. What is it rated?
ReplyDeleteAthziry, this is a really amazing blog! So since the journal was edited, were the names changed, or were the names kept? To be honest, I feel like a lot of people stay with their abusive partners because they believe it's love, it was on an episode of Criminal Minds, FYI. This was a fab blog.
