Prompt: relationships between the characters
why I don't like the book & sarcasm rant

What stuck out to me as I have been reading Bluefish have been the relationships between all the characters. Travis, the main character who moved from the country, has strange relationships. I think that this might be because he isn't very open about his feelings or what he thinks. The one that sticks out the most is his relationship with his Grandfather. They give each other a bad attitude and are very sarcastic to one another. I still don't know why this is but it's possibly because he moved from one town and suddenly has to live with his grandpa. Travis is probably angry. This is also because he has no one to talk to since his grandpa lost his dog.

Another relationship that sticks out is his relationship with Velveeta. They are classmates and she's one of the two people who actually talk to Travis. They're not considered friends. Yet. From what I have been reading, they are pretty on and off. He doesn't talk much either and Velveeta really likes his face. That's all I get from their "friendship."

The really annoying thing about this book and all books that are for teens are that all the characters are sarcastic. It's getting pretty old because a) not all teenagers are sarcastic and b) sarcasm doesn't make the book better when ALL of the characters have the same personality and c) people who say, "I'm a sarcastic person lol datz just me bein me!!!!" I suppose I'm taking a break from teen lit after this because it's all "wow look at me being sarcastic wow such sarcasm much funny."

*I haven't read much due to other assignments and other things so my blog posts have no difference in my opinion. I'm going to try to finish it over the weekend! Hopefully there will be no more Bluefish blog posts.

  1. I get what you mean when you say that most teen books have sarcasm in them. It annoys me too. You should try to read a book about dogs. They can't upset you no matter how hard they try. By the way, love the picture you used.

  3. I can definitely see why you don't like this book(when I read your blog I thought of it as a new episode from GLEE? And Santana having a rant about Travis, Velveeta, and how you said that everyone's sarcastic in the book! Also, when I read the name Velveeta I thought of Lolita from Lana Del Rey lol)! I have to agree with you about how not all teens are sarcastic. Maybe in their head they are(I know I am sometimes), but nobody says that all the time! I literally laughed out loud when you said, "I'm a sarcastic person lol datz just me bein me!!!!"! From reading your posts on Bluefish it seems like Travis is a really 1-D character. It was a nice touch how you added the Kingsley GIF! I loved your blog!

  4. Athziry - I appreciate you bringing up the fact that many books are written from a sarcastic teen. Why do you think author's use this approach? I have some Classic Lit. you could try next.

    1. I believe they do this so it's more "teen friendly." The story is usually easier to read this way and to most people it's much more entertaining to read.
