I am currently reading The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. It's a great book so far. The main character, Hazel Grace, was diagnosed with Stage 4 thyroid cancer with metastasis on her lungs when she was 13. An experimental drug kept her alive. She goes to a support group with other kids who have cancer and meets Augustus. Right now in the book, Augustus wants to take Hazel to Amsterdam using his wish from "The Genies". They want to go because the author of their favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. Hazel is really excited but she chooses not to because she doesn't want to hurt Gus. That is because Gus' girlfriend died of cancer and she already knows that she will die soon from cancer.
This story is interesting and different from other books I have read. What makes a story interesting is having the characters be realistic. That doesn't mean that they have to relate to the reader but they can picture the character in their head and know what kind of person they are. Another thing that makes a story interesting is adding an past of the characters. In The Fault In Our Stars, you'll learn that Augustus had lost his girlfriend to cancer. Due to the loss of his girlfriend, it creates later conflict in the story.
Besides having realistic characters, detailed actions make a story interesting. What I mean by detailed actions is when the author describes what a character is doing so well that you can picture the character doing it in your head. Just imagine having a movie in your head, those are the kinds of books a majority of people like. There's a part in The Fault In Our Stars where Hazel goes to Gus' house and their support group friend, Isaac, is there. Isaac is really upset because his girlfriend broke up with him. Isaac got upset and took his anger out by kicking chairs and slamming things. This part had so much detail and I imagined it in my head.
I really liked the amount of description you put in the summary! This book sound so interesting and sad. I will definitely look into reading this book!
ReplyDeleteI loved how you were able to summarize everything with out giving any major spoilers. This book sound very sad and beautiful at the same time. When you describe the scene of Hazel going to Gus' house and how Isaac was upset about his breakup made it sounds like an emotional part. I am very interested in this book. I hope to read it soon!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sarai about your ability to summarize without ruining the book. This is on my list of books to read!
DeleteThis was one of my favorite books ever, so I am happy to hear someone else is reading this. I think you did TFioS justice in this blog post, good job! Happy reading, and I hope you have a box of tissues.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your post. The reason for this is that I've always heard fantastic things about John Green, but I've never been able to come around and find his books. Your post certainly reminded me to find his stories, especially this one. The story seems rather emotional.
ReplyDeleteOnce I started reading your blog I couldn't stop. I also like realistic fiction type of books because I would also want to imagine a picture of the event that is happening in the book. I defiantly would want to read this book for sure. This reminds me partly of another book I read about this boy having cancer and having to go to this far away hospital to get this special treatment. I have a feeling that later on in the book Hazel Grace will live and survive cancer.
